Puzzle dungeon snake game

Temple Of Snek is a video game from Pixeljam that brings you the classic snake game with a twist. Here, you control a snake that grows as it eats. However, you will also solve puzzles as you grow.

Controls-wise, Temple Of Snek follows the same as the original game. The snake always moves forward, and it's up to you to guide it to the cardinal directions—left, right, up, and down. Your concern is not only avoiding colliding with the wall as your food will also attack you. Furthermore, you will solve puzzles to continue moving forward.

Eat, grow, and solve puzzles

The story of Temple Of Snek takes you to a temple deep in the jungle. In the temple lies the goddess Snek. When the grave robbers came to loot the treasures inside the temple, the priestess sounded the mighty gong. The goddess, taking the form of a giant snake, awakens and starts to eat every robber in sight. Every time it eats, its size grows.

Like the classic snake games, the goddess Snek must avoid colliding with the wall or herself to avoid dying. The robbers are armed, which also poses a danger. More than that, the rooms have puzzles you need to solve in order to move. Some tiles come with spike traps you can activate and deactivate with a button. Moreover, some doors are controlled by switches.

Another difference is that the snake moves one tile per beat instead of smoothly slithering on the floor. This slower movement allows you breathing room to think of solving the puzzles, which can be, at times, challenging. What also helped is the fact that you have infinite lives. The game is also generous in terms of checkpoints, allowing you to restart without replaying your previously completed sections.

A more challenging snake game

Temple Of Snek is a clever take on the classic game. It follows some well-loved elements of the original game, but it also added new ones to make it fresh. The puzzles are well thought out, and the game is darkly humorous at times. The checkpoint systems are also a blessing for those who are likely to die over and over. However, there isn't much to it in terms of content.

PROS

  • Familiar concept
  • Varied puzzles
  • Generous checkpoints
  • Immediate replay

CONS

  • Small content
  • The snake moves slowly
